The Problem

The website of Amani Women’s Center - a nonprofit organization - lacked usability, clear hierarchy, and focus, making it difficult for users to navigate and access important information. The absence of a well-structured information architecture led to confusion and inefficiencies in user engagement.

In Numbers

~ 27% of users abandon site before completing intended action

~ 60% of users overwhelmed by excessive text

~ 58% of users struggle to find key information (E.g., donations, programs, contact)

The Goal

Redesign key website pages in order to:

  • Enhance Usability & Accessibility – Create a clear, intuitive navigation structure that allows users to easily find information, access resources, and engage with the nonprofit’s mission without confusion or frustration.

  • Improve Content Organization & Hierarchy – Establish a well-structured information architecture with clear headings, sections, and calls to action, ensuring that key content is easily scannable and digestible for visitors.

  • Align Design with User & Organizational Needs – Develop a visually cohesive and mission-driven website that reflects the nonprofit’s goals, effectively communicates its impact, and encourages donations, volunteer sign-ups, and community engagement.

High-Fidelity Web Prototype

A high-fidelity prototype prioritizing usability, clarity, and accessibility with an intuitive and engaging user experience.

By implementing a refined information architecture, streamlined navigation, and visually cohesive design, the layout enhances usability while maintaining the nonprofit’s mission-driven focus. The prototype serves as a blueprint for implementation.

Final Solution

Research Process

Stakeholder Identification

Before starting the research process, identified key stakeholders to identify what should be prioritized in the design and to ensure the design aligned with business objectives and user satisfaction

Data Collection
Observation

Conducted a thorough audit of pages to be redesigned identifying key areas for improvement. The primary issue was information overload, making it difficult for users to quickly grasp the organization's mission and take action.

  • Key observations:

    • Excessive text can overwhelm users, leading to frustration and disengagement.

    • The videos present lacked context, adding to initial confusion.

    • Unstructured content flow (About Us, Programs, Initiatives, Blog, Donations, etc.) made navigation unclear.

    • Graphics and text alignment needed reformatting for clarity and cohesion.

    • No clear CTA

Technical Writing

To enhance the readability of the website, I reviewed and refined its content,
As part of this process, I:

  • Condensed and restructured content to improve clarity and accessibility.

  • Refined language to ensure a consistent and engaging tone.

  • Created a Google document outlining the proposed updates for client review.

  • Encouraged collaborative feedback, allowing the client to comment and suggest changes directly.

This approach ensured the final content was user-friendly, helping visitors quickly understand key information while improving overall site engagement.

Wireframes

To improve usability, I designed a wireframe prioritizing hierarchy, readability, and engagement.

Throughout the process, stayed engaged with client through e-mail and asked questions/gave updates as needed.

Final Solution

High-Fidelity Web Prototype

After selecting the most effective solutions, we developed a high-fidelity website prototype to bring our redesign to life. This prototype aligns with our established goals of usability, clarity, and accessibility, ensuring a more intuitive and engaging user experience.

By implementing a refined information architecture, streamlined navigation, and visually cohesive design, the new layout enhances usability while maintaining the nonprofit’s mission-driven focus. The prototype serves as a blueprint for implementation.

Results once implemented

~38% increase in users successfully finding key information (e.g., donation pages, programs, volunteer opportunities).
~Reduced bounce rate as visitors navigate more intuitively through clear menu structures and logical content hierarchy.

~18% increase in volunteer sign-ups
